The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.The tournament was first known as the Australasian Championships and then became the Australian Championships in 1927 and the Australian Open in 1969.Since 2003 the tournament has billed itself as the “Grand Slam of Asia Pacific". The Australian Open is the only Grand Slam to have played in different countries as it was held in New Zealand in both 1906 and 1912. It was also held in all five major Australian cities before Melbourne became its permanent home in 1972.The 2017 Australian Open was a tennis tournament that took place at Melbourne Park between 16–29 January 2017. It was the 105th edition of the Australian Open.
