Kudumbasree was launched by Government of Kerala.

It was launched in 17th May 1998.

Main aim was wipeing out absolute poverty from the state through community action under the leadership of local self Government.

Kudumbasree is one of the largest women empowerment project launched in the country.

It aims at the empowerment of women through forming Self Help Groups (SHG) and encouraging their entrepreneurial or other wide range of activities.

The activities of Kudumbasree mission is controlled by a state level officer headed by and IAS Officer and at district level a District Mission Team. At the Panchayath level an officer is given the responsibility of the administration.

The programme has 42 Lakh members and cover more than 50% of the houseolds in Kerala.

Kudumbasree plays a vital role in enhancing the financial status of the less privilaged women in the state through its thrift and credit societies.

These societies facilitate them to save and provide them with cost effective and easy credit.

The savings of the women are pooled together and given out as loans to the most deserving.
